* Trained new members in producing terminal aerodrome forecasts (TAFS), aircrew mission briefings, and graphics charts for the Southeast continental United States. * Served as Aircrew Mission Briefing Manager; provided quality assurance for aircrew mission weather forecasts and enabled safe execution of more than 5,000 missions. * Prepared, issued, and verified airfield forecasts while coordinating with four Air Force regional weather centers to produce seamless graphical forecasts of aviation hazards for the entire continental United States using LEADS software. * Responsible for continual monitoring of meteorological conditions using satellite, radar, and model data in order to issue watches, warnings, and advisories to alert supported units of critical weather phenomena and severe weather potential that could impact combat and training operations. * Responsible for tactical- and operational-level weather support to over 120 Air Force and Army active duty, guard, and reserve installations in the South Central United States. * Helped support Joint Task Force Katrina, and later Joint Task Force Rita, providing atmospheric forecasts for several military and Department of Defense units aiding in the relief efforts following both hurricanes.
Battlefield and Special Operations Weathermen are meteorologists with advanced tactical training to operate in hostile or denied territory. They gather and interpret weather data and provide intelligence from deployed locations while working primarily with Army (Battlefield Weather) and Special Operations (Special Operations Weather) forces. They collect localized weather information, assist mission planning, and generate accurate, mission-tailored target and route forecasts in support of conventional and special operations. They also train joint force members to take and communicate limited weather observations. Additionally, Special Operations Weathermen conduct special reconnaissance, collect upper air data, organize, establish and maintain weather data reporting networks, determine host nation meteorological capabilities and train foreign national forces. They deploy into restricted environments by air, land or sea to observe and analyze all weather data from "mud to sun." Operating in all climates, day or night, these weathermen maintain the highest standards of physical fitness and proficiency in the use of light weapons.
